Where do ideas come from?

A question often asked of writers is 'where do you get your ideas from?' and although it may seem 'cool' or 'artistic' in some circles, alcohol and drug inspired hallucinations are probably not the best source.

The fact is that ideas come from everything and everyone around us. Some sources are obvious such as news, TV and movies, or even other writers (although beware of creeping plagiarism).  Other sources are endless: that strange person you saw on the bus, the lady you saw waiting alone at the theatre- what's her mystery? Or a particular feeling of guilt or joy.

Recently, I wrote a short story which started off when I noticed a very slight mark on my neck while shaving. Something that small and simple was enough to turn an entire story and twist around.

Ultimately, stories come within us. They are our own personal takes on everything from the most mundane to the most profound. So as you move about your day, make sure you look around from time to time. Who knows what you might find?
